Propane characteristics and hazards

Propane is a colourless and odorless liquified gas, unless odorized with ethyl mercaptan (skunky odor, similar to boiling cabbage or rotten eggs).

Be aware:

  • Propane is extremely flammable; easily ignited by heat, sparks or flames.
  • Its vapors are heavier than air, can spread along the ground, and a flame can flash back to the source of a leak, whether a liquid leak or vapor leak.
  • Propane vapors can cause asphyxiation.
  • Contact with the unconfined liquid can cause frostbite by evaporative cooling.

Husky’s emergency preparedness & response

Husky has assessed the propane storage and identified potential scenarios that could lead to an unplanned release.  The unplanned release of propane at this site is extremely unlikely; however, these scenarios could include fire, unloading incidents, pipe-system failure, container degradation, container damage (motor vehicle accident, vandalism, etc.) and container rupture.

We have calculated the impact distance to be approximately 80 metres. In the event an unplanned release does occur, this site is equipped with an Emergency Response Plan (ERP) and all site personnel are trained to enact this plan immediately. Once enacted, local authorities would be notified and would respond as necessary. Safety is our number one priority for our customers, employees and the communities in which we operate.

Husky takes the following steps to ensure safe and reliable use of propane at our locations:

  • Each location has a site-specific ERP to guide how we will respond. All emergency plans are updated and reviewed at least once a year. Husky also has a corporate response team that is ready to assist 24/7.
  • Personnel at this site are trained to know what to do in the event of an emergency. Emergency exercises are conducted at least annually.
  • Husky Operations and Safety personnel visit all sites to ensure the safety of all employees and the public.
  • Supplier-led inspections by qualified personnel ensure the safety and integrity of the infrastructure, as well as its components, collision/damage protection, cautionary signage, fire extinguishers.
  • Husky follows an extensive corporate system designed to ensure high operational integrity at all our sites.  This system is reviewed regularly.
  • Husky provides local emergency responders with a copy of the ERP to lead response actions and implement public protection measures.
